The Arizona Cancer Center at the University of Arizona is the recipient of a multi-million dollar endowment from a retired retail executive.

The $5 million endowment from Fenton L. Maynard of Phoenix, who died in July, is the largest gift ever for the 33-year-old cancer center. The gift, officially known as the “Margaret E. and Fenton L. Maynard Excellence in Breast Cancer Research Endowment, will be used to support basic and clinical research by scientists and physicians to help improve diagnosis, treatment and prevention of breast cancer, which killed 87-year-old Maynard’s wife Margaret in 2006.

Fenton Maynard retired in 1982 from Skaggs Drugs and American Stores as a senior executive vice president.
