Science writer Mary Roach

Mary Roach has been described as "America's funniest science writer." It could be said that she is curious about many things that most people are reluctant to discuss.

Her previous books include Stiff, about what really happens to bodies after death, and Bonk, which explored the mysteries of sex research. Roach described working on Bonk as "awkward."

Her newest book is Gulp! - Adventures in the Alimentary Canal, an in-depth look at the science of food -- and other things that people can swallow.

It's a fast-paced journey through the human body -- and the laboratories where the process of eating is examined with cutting edge technology.
