The Five Cs: A Century Later

Arizona Public Media’s Special Report on Arizona’s cattle, citrus, cotton, copper and climate industries. Friday at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. on NPR 89.1.

Historically, Arizona's economy was said to be built on The Five Cs: Cattle, Citrus, Climate, Copper and Cotton. But are they still money-makers? The Five Cs: A Century Later looks at the past, present and future of the state’s economic heavyweights.

  • Meet Arizona ranchers and learn about the business of beef, which is often a family affair going back generations.

  • Get to know third-generation farmer Ron Rayner as he talks about the challenges of growing the crop in the desert.

  • Travel to suburban Phoenix, where long-time citrus grower DeWayne Justice is finding new ways to sell his lemons.

  • Discover how the desert was “tamed” and how ongoing drought could affect Arizona's long-term economy.

  • Explore the history of copper mining in Arizona and hear from supporters and opponents of efforts to build more mines.

The Five Cs: A Century Later, on NPR 89.1 Friday at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m.
