Gov. Jan Brewer has created the Government Transformation Office with hopes it will make state government run more efficiently.
One state department already working on improving its service to the public is the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
By changing procedures, the department is taking less time to issue air quality permits, says Director Henry Darwin, who is part of Brewer’s transformation committee.
The department is also bundling contracts for underground storage tank cleanups, hiring one contractor to clean multiple sites.
"This is one of the best examples so far of our efforts resulting in more environmental benefits, more environmental good because we’re going to be able to clean up twice as many sites in the upcoming year as we did in the previous year," Darwin says.
As a member of Brewer's committee, Darwin says he can teach other departments how to change their policies to save time and money without adding staff.
