An assistant professor at the University of Arizona College of Nursing is one of a dozen nursing educators to receive a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Matthew J. Gallek is being recognized as a "nurse faculty scholar" this year by the foundation, which provides a three-year $350,000 award to each of the recipients.

"Part of the money is to support my research," Gallek says. "In this case I'm looking at genetics involved in subarachnoid hemorrhage, which is a type of stroke, and this also helps support some of my salary and allows me to hire people to help me look at this disease."

Gallek says he heard about the program from College of Nursing colleague Ruth Taylor-Piliae.

She was selected for the competitive award by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 2009.
