U.S. Rep. Ron Barber, D-Ariz., is airing the first television advertisement in the race for Congressional District 2 in Southern Arizona.

In the ad, a woman named Fran Bartholomeaux explains how Barber helped prevent her home from going into foreclosure when he was former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' district director.

Barber worked in that job for five years before he became a candidate to fill the remainder of Giffords' third term earlier this year. He won that election in June and is competing with Republican Martha McSally for a full, two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Two years ago, Giffords and her opponent, Republican Jesse Kelly, aired numerous ads, and multiple outside groups spent money to sway voters in the district.

Barber's ad was released Wednesday. Thursday morning, McSally released her first ad in the race.
