The Tucson Roller Derby opens its 10th season Friday, debuting a new venue, "The Wreckhouse," at 1145 E. Valencia Road.
The nonprofit Roller Derby, featuring two teams of women in bang-em-up roller skating on an oval track, will pair up with other local organizations, beginning with the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. Food Bank donations will be taken at the door.
In October, the derby will fund raise for breast cancer research by asking patrons to bring new and slightly used bras for donation.
The Copper Queens team features Megan Wallace, known by her skater name "Iva Coalheart."
"A lot of the girls say joining a Roller Derby team was a soul saver, and it really was," says Wallace.
Tucson Roller Derby has created a program for "newbies" to the sport, ensuring each skater a training course that will prepare her for the competition.
