Houston Grand Opera broadcasts continue on Classical 90.5 at noon this Saturday, November 3rd, with a performance of Fidelio by Ludvig van Beethoven, with a German libretto by Joseph Sonnleithner. Sonnleithner's work was preceded by that of Jean-Nicolas Bouilly in French, the basis for the opera Léonore, ou L’amour conjugal by Pierre Gaveaux in 1798, and in 1804 for the opera Leonora by Ferdinando Paer. Beethoven is known to have owned a copy of the score of the latter work. The performance will run approximately two hours and six minutes. Michael Hofstetter conducts.

Leonore is willing to do whatever it takes to free her husband, Florestan, an innocent political prisoner. Disguised as a boy, Fidelio, she bravely prevents Florestan's assassination by a corrupt governor. Beethoven's only opera is a musically brilliant story of a wife's selfless and courageous love.
