The Arizona Board of Regents Monday announced it was hiring Eileen Klein as its next president.

Klein has served as Gov. Jan Brewer's chief of staff. She will replace Tom Anderes, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek extension of his three-year term.

The regents' president works with the presidents of Arizona's three state universities and with the regents on financial issues, strategic planning and execution and development of the university system.

“Ms. Klein will greatly complement our three university presidents in their roles as members of the Enterprise Executive Committee," regents chair Rick Myers said in a press release.

Brewer's office announced that Scott Smith will be her new chief of staff, replacing Klein. Smith was Brewer's top legislative lobbyist before becoming her deputy chief of staff.

He is also director of the state Department of Administration and was point man for Brewer in working on a package of changes to state personnel system.

The changes take effect Nov. 9, Brewer's office said.
