Broadcasts from The Metropolitan Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at 10:00 a.m. with a performance of La Forza del Destino by Giuseppe Verdi. The libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on a Spanish drama, Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino (1835), by Ángel de Saavedra, Duke of Rivas, with a scene adapted from Friedrich Schiller's Wallensteins Lager.

Verdi's sprawling, moody drama chronicles a noble family destroyed by powers beyond their control. In this classic encore performance (recorded March 12, 1977) selected from the Met's vast archives, James Levine conducts a legendary cast with Leontyne Price and Plácido Domingo as the ill-fated lovers.
