The Internal Revenue Service has a tax credit available for the next month for employers who hire veterans.

Paperwork to claim the credit must be filed within 28 days of the veteran starting the job.

The employer tax credit can be for as much as $9,600 per veteran hired by a for-profit business. Nonprofit businesses can take up $6,240 per veteran as a credit against paying the employee's Social Security taxes.

To qualify, employers must file paperwork with the IRS.

"They also have to work with the respective state workforce agency on the qualifications of the veteran to make sure that they are certified, meet the requirements needed,” said Bill Brunson, IRS spokesman.

The IRS cautions employers not to claim the tax credits until after the paperwork is filed and certified, Brunson said.
