The Canyon del Oro High School Academic Decathlon team placed eighth overall and second in its group in the national competition last weekend.

The annual competition, which tests students in 10 events, focused on Russia this year, said Mindy Blake, Amphitheater School District spokeswoman.

The nine members of the CDO team are pleased with their success, Blake said.

"They're very proud of their accomplishments. They worked really hard," she said.

They must compete in 10 competitions, she said.

"Just like an athletic decathlon, there are 10 events that the students are tested in," Blake said, including "art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, math, social science and speech."

Each team includes students with varied academic credentials.

"The great thing about academic decathlon is that it's designed to include students from all achievement levels so on the team there are three A students, three B students and three C students," Blake said."

The students' initially were notified that they had won in their group, but the judges later found a scoring error and determined the CDO team came in second, Blake said.
