A University of Arizona researcher is working on growing replacement tissues cultivated from a patient's stem cells. The research offers a new way to help patients with arthritis who normally would have total-joint replacement.

The cells which would regenerate into cartilage would be grown on a plastic scaffold that would be put in the damaged joint and dissolve after about a year. Hi-tech procedure could be available in the next five years.
