The Tucson City Council unanimously approved changes to the city’s water service policy to provide a clearer definition of service boundaries in outlying areas.

The changes apply to the 2010 policy that restricts who can receive city water beyond existing service areas.

"What this policy will do is provide some order into how expansion occurs outside the current city limits but within our service area," said Fernando Molina, Tucson Water spokesman. "More importantly, I think there is a connection in that (it) provides some order to looking at annexation requests."

Molina said a review board will look at requests for new services on an annual basis.

The changes were based on recommendations from the Citizen's Water Advisory Council.
