The Border Patrol is considering installing razor wire atop the border fence in Nogales.

Nogales Mayor Arturo Garino said he learned of the plan from the agent in charge of the Nogales station.

"She commented that they had a proposal of installing razor wire about 10 feet high on the American side of the fence for deterrent,” Garino said.

Garino said he opposes the plan.

Brent Cagen, a spokesman for the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector, confirmed the proposal.

"Currently, this proposal is still under review," Cagen said. "Specifics concerning this proposal are unavailable at this time."

Garino said he plans to meet with Border Patrol in the coming weeks. He said he hopes to develop an alternative to the razor wire.
