Festival Showcases Historic Neighborhood

The Armory Park neighborhood event used porches and music to highlight the area.

Front porches were the centerpieces at PorchFest Armory Park, which took place on June 30.

The event featured 19 musical acts who performed on 12 porches from homes in the historic Armory Park neighborhood.

Resident Pam Sutherland hosted musicians on her porch. She says the idea of the festival was simple, but it showcased the virtues of Armory Park.

Sutherland also says PorchFest was a natural extension of what the neighborhood exemplifies.

"When you walk around Armory Park in the evening, people are just sitting around...(chatting)," she says.

The event was inspired by a similar, day-long festival that takes place in Somerville, Mass., near Boston.

Sutherland says plans for the next PorchFest are underway.
