An east Phoenix motel purchased by a nonprofit is going to be converted into permanent housing for homeless people.
Chicanos Por La Causa bought the Travel Inn property last year and said it plans to open it this winter with apartments for the chronically homeless and homeless veterans.
The Arizona Republic reported that the group purchased the property with funds from a Neighborhood Stabilization Program grant provided by the the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The nonprofit paid $2.1 million in September 2012. The Republic reported that the organization plans to convert some of the rooms into studios and others into one or two-bedroom apartments for families.
