Pima County received a $3.4 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to battle buffelgrass.

Kerry Baldwin, natural resource division manager for Pima County, said the FEMA funds will be used to protect critical infrastructure from natural disasters.

"We applied for a grant that would protect two primary areas," Baldwin said. "One (is a) grouping of county facilities, and...the second is at Tucson International Airport, which is the most comprehensive area of the grant."

Baldwin said the airport has a significant infestation of buffelgrass, "which they been trying to control over the years, and this was an opportunity to get in and really get after it," he said.

The grant was awarded last year, but the county first had to survey the infestations. Crews are now on the ground at the sites spraying herbicide, he said.
