The head of the state Board of Executive Clemency has resigned and been replaced by another member of the board.

The Arizona Republic reported that Jesse Hernandez submitted a terse resignation letter Friday, with his resignation from the $84,000-a-year job effective at 5 p.m. that day.

Hernandez was appointed board chairman and executive director last year, and Brewer spokesman Andrew Wilder says he doesn't know why Hernandez quit.

His replacement as chairman is Brian Livingston, a retired Phoenix police officer who was among three people appointed to the board by Brewer last year.

The board considers state prison inmates' requests for clemency.
