Hear a complete interview with Laird Close, project scientist with the Magellan Adaptive Optics System, or MagAO. It was partially developed at the University of Arizona.
Currently installed at the Magellan Telescope at Carnegie's Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, the system is letting astronomers take the sharpest pictures ever of distant celestial objects.
In this interview, Close explains how the system was developed and tested. He also recalls the excitement he and the other scientists felt when they first turned MagAO on and trained it skyward.
