A job fair for veterans and military spouses, hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation as part of its “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative, is coming to Tucson on Sept. 10.
The initiative was developed to reduce the unemployment rate of veterans, and helping transition military personnel and military spouses.
At the fair, attendees will have a chance to interview with 72 local and national employers, including Verizon Wireless. Kerion Dawkins, the southwest regional event coordinator for the program, said people will also be able to participate in employment workshops.
Participating employers must have at least one job opening if they are a small business, and two or more if they are a larger business, she said.
“In those workshops, what we do is we give resume writing tools as well as interviewing tips,” Dawkins said. “...they also go through mock interviews that we provide.”
The military population is a factor in choosing eligible cities for job fairs, she said.Tucson was chosen because of the large military communities in the area, such as the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Fort Huachuca and other veteran organizations.
“Hiring Our Heroes” launched in March 2011. Since then, Dawkins said more than 20,000 veterans were hired as a result of the job fairs.
