Northern Arizona University President John Haeger says he plans to step down when his contract ends in June 2015.
The 70-year-old Haeger was appointed president of the Flagstaff school in 2001.
Haeger said Thursday that after his term ends in 2015, he plans to return to NAU later as a professor in higher education leadership and governance.
The Arizona Board of Regents says it will begin to implement a presidential succession plan at NAU.
Under Haeger's leadership, NAU's enrollment has grown by 34 percent in the past 12 years.
He oversaw an aggressive rebuilding of the aging Flagstaff campus and opened NAU-Yavapai in Prescott Valley, a campus that offers bachelor's degrees in three years.
