The Arizona State Poetry Society's annual contest is under way, and the society is encouraging submissions from poets of all ages and backgrounds.

Society President Christy White said people can enter previously unpublished work in 12 categories.

"I think that poetry is always a commentary on life as a whole," White said. "It’s not just political poetry that can speak about what’s going on in today’s world, but it’s the poetry a person might write sitting at their kitchen table about what’s happening in their life.”

One category is called poetic postings, with submissions having originally been posted on Facebook by the authors. Other categories include short free verse, humor and pick your form.

White said cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third places in each category. Entry deadline is Sept. 28.
