Arizona’s top education official is giving $10,000 for two scholarship programs at Sunnyside Unified School District.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal came to Tucson this week and gave the Sunnyside governing board two $5,000 checks to fund new scholarships.

One will be in the name of his late mother, who lived across the street from the school district offices for decades.

The other is for a math program Huppenthal said the district has embraced.

The personal checks are a reflection of his commitment to the district, he said. He grew up in Sunnyside, and won a state wrestling championship on the Sunnyside High School wrestling team. He went to Salpointe Catholic High School, there wasn't a wrestling team there so he was able to wrestle for Sunnyside.

While speaking to the Sunnyside board, Huppenthal implored the governing board to set aside differences and focus on education. He offered to mediate the board’s philosophical split amid two campaigns to recall four of the five board members.
