Various of running events are scheduled in downtown Tucson Sunday, and organizers say the course has been modified because of the recently completed sections of the streetcar line.
The Southern Arizona Roadrunners is sponsoring the event that includes the TMC A-Mountain Half Marathon, the Tucson Lifestyle 5K, and a one-mile fun run.
Randy Accetta is with the Roadrunners, and he said his organization likes to stage events downtown.
"We started putting on events in downtown Tucson to make downtown the epicenter of Tucson, so we’re delighted with all the changes that are going on there," he said. "On the other hand we’ve had to change the route almost every year because of the streetcar."
Accetta said current regulations do not allow running or bicycling events to take place along the streetcar route.
"...Tucson Police, the civic events committee that approves plans for events are saying ‘no, we need you off the streetcar tracks until we can figure out what to do next,'" Accetta explained
This year’s event no longer includes sections of Congress Street and Fourth Avenue, and all races begin and end downtown on Church Avenue next to the Joel D Valdez Main Library.
