A new graphic novel released in Europe highlights the music scene and culture of Tucson. The author said he hopes audiences will learn about the Old Pueblo as the birthplace for popular music now playing in France.

Nicolas Moog is the author and illustrator of the French graphic novel Retour a Sonora, or Back to Sonora. He calls it an art book and it features the stories of several musicians from Tucson.

"In this book I talk about Gabriel Sullivan, Brian Lopez, Howe Gelb, Billy Sedlmayr and Chris Black," he said.

Moog said people in France know Tucson because of the band Calexico. And, the stories in the book help tell a larger narrative of the community, and the culture that produced the current crop of musicians touring in Europe.

"Arizona and Tucson are known in France… There is not only Calexico on the map, there is a bunch of very good musicians, and I wanted to open French people to a new music scene that is less known in France," he explained.

Nicolas Moog will appear at two events in Tucson: Saturday, Oct. 26 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Cafe Passe on Fourth Avenue, and Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at Borderlands Brewery.
