Gov. Jan Brewer has declared Nov. 9-17 as Valley Fever Awareness Week.

Valley fever infections have tripled in the state over the last decade, state officials said.

The Arizona Department of Health Services and the University of Arizona Valley Fever Center for Excellence have partnered to raise awareness of the infectious disease.

“Valley fever is a disease of the Southwest because the (causing) fungus thrives in the desert-like soil...," said Clarisse Tsang, an ADHS epidemiologist. "What happens is the spores get in the air and people can inhale the spores and get sick...we really want to raise education because it’s a disease that regional.”

This week, UA will be hosting educational events on the disease in Phoenix and Tucson.
