Arizona universities lost $500 million in revenue during the recession, said Arizona Board of Regents President Eileen Klein at a meeting in downtown Phoenix Wednesday.

Klein told the audience she wants state lawmakers to help make up for those losses.

"A number of the lawmakers, who are here with us today, made some bold decisions," she said. "They helped fund our states Medicaid program...one of the critical side benefits of that move is that it’s going to free up dollars that are going to be essential to help support our state’s education system."

The board has asked state lawmakers to increase funding to Arizona’s three public universities by $107.6 million from the current budget. The board requested $843.1 million for the universities for fiscal year 2015-16.
