Matinee broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at 11:00 this Saturday, December 28th, with a performance of Tosca by Giacomo Puccini with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The performance will run approximately three hours and thirty-five minutes.
A fiery prima donna is forced to play a role she never imagined when she becomes trapped between her allegiance to her rebel lover and the scheming of a treacherous police chief who will stop at nothing in his lust for her. The explosive triangle comes to a hair-raising conclusion. One of opera's bloodiest, most intense dramas, Tosca is also one of the most popular works in the repertoire and features some of Puccini's most openly beautiful and passionate music.
Puccini's fast-moving operatic thriller with its timeless verismo score is well served by an exceptional cast. Sondra Radvanovsky sings the title role of the jealous diva, opposite tenor Marcello Giordani. George Gagnidze is the villainous Scarpia. Marco Armiliato conducts.
Tosca is a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Teatro alla Scala.
