Matinee broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, January 25th, with a performance of L'Elisir d'Amore (The Elixir of Love) by Gaetano Donizetti, with a libretto in Italian by Felice Romani, after Eugène Scribe's libretto for Daniel-François-Esprit Auber's _Le philtre of 1831. The performance will run approximately two hours and fifty minutes.

The young Nemorino is down and out. He has a dead-end job, is hardly noticed by the ladies, and is hopelessly in love with Adina, who's indifferent to him. She's not indifferent to the yearnings of Sergeant Belcore, however. She even wants to marry him. Poor Nemorino thinks he doesn't stand a chance with Adina. Enter Dr. Dulcamara, a huckster, a con man, and a charmer who whips up an "elixir" (really a bad Bordeaux) that turns Nemorino into a real-life Don Giovanni. The result is one of opera's most beloved comedies, which also features one of the most frequently excerpted arias in opera: "Una furtiva lagrima."

Star soprano Anna Netrebko reprises her adorable Adina in Bartlett Sher's charming production. Maurizio Benini conducts.
