One of the two recall efforts against the Sunnyside Unified School District board members has failed.

The group leading a recall campaign against board members Daniel Hernandez Jr. and Buck Crouch did not submit the necessary signatures by the Dec. 13 deadline.

“As a result of not getting the petition in, their application expired and they no longer can submit petitions after that,” said Ricky Hernandez, chief financial officer with the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent.

Longtime board member Louie Gonzales said he and Bobby Garcia started the recall efforts against fellow board members after a group began collecting signatures to recall Gonzales and Garcia.

The group leading the recall against Gonzales and Garcia submitted more than the 1,500 signatures required by law for each campaign last month, and now the Pima County Recorders Office is evaluating those signatures.

If the signatures are valid there will be a recall election against the long time board members in May.

Trying to recall four out of the five board members had never happened before at Sunnyside.

The recalls were in reaction to controversy surrounding district's Superintendent Manuel Isquierdo. The two members who voted against Isquierdo’s contract renewal were Daniel Hernandez Jr. and Crouch, while Eva Dong voted with Gonzales and Garcia to keep Isquierdo.
