When Alberto Alvaro Rios looks for inspiration for a poem, he looks out in the world.

"I don't go to a book of poems. That's where the poetry is," Rios said. "I go elsewhere, I need to find it where it isn't."

Rios was named the first Arizona Poet Laureate. His job is to inspire and education Arizonans about the influence of poets and authors.

"I hope to leverage this for the good of everybody," Rios said. "I want to be able to exchange stereotype for substance."

During his time as poet laureate, Rios will travel throughout Arizona for public readings.
