Matinee broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday, March 15th, with a performance of Werther by Jules Massenet, with a French libretto by Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann, based on the German epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The broadcast will run approximately three hours and fifteen minutes.
Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role of Massenet's sublime adaptation of Goethe's revolutionary and tragic romance for the first time at the Met, opposite Sophie Koch as Charlotte. The new production is directed and designed by Richard Eyre and Rob Howell, the same team that created the Met's recent hit staging of Carmen. Rising young maestro Alain Altinoglu conducts.
