UA researchers have been awarded a 1.6 million dollar five year grant from the National Science Foundation to investigate microbial life in Kartchner Caverns State Park. Researchers will catalog the microbial inhabitants of the cave, study how tourism affects their diversity, also the multi-disciplined science team will look for microbes that could be used for medical, industrial and biotechnology applications. The NSF has made Kartchner Caverns part of it's worldwide network of Microbial Observatories.
