The Arizona Legislature is preparing to provide Gov. Jan Brewer with $6.8 million to allow the state's child welfare agency to hire 192 new workers right away.

Brewer asked for the money as part of an overall $74 million request to remake Child Protective Services included in her proposal for the budget year beginning July 1.

The Senate Appropriations Committee takes up the $6.8 million supplemental funding proposal Tuesday. It shifts $1.1 million in the current budget to the Department of Economic Security and gives the agency another $5.7 million.

Also set for consideration is a nearly $1.4 million request for the Independent Redistricting Commission. A $100,000 appropriation for lawyers fighting subpoenas issued to current and former lawmakers about their communications concerning 2010's Senate Bill 1070 also will be considered.
