In 2004, Kirsten Nelson moved from New York to Tucson and started the nonprofit Casa Libre en La Solana. From the beginning, the organization's mission has been to support and enhance the creativity of professional and novice writers.

"Ten years later, I feel good about that decision," Nelson said.

She said Tucson was the place she felt that her grass roots organization could thrive.

Now, Casa Libre offers classes, reading series, symposiums, writing shops and more to the community. They often partner with the local literary and arts community.

"We've always strived to be the hub," Nelson said. "A lot of our local literary organizations don't have a venue. One of the things Casa Libre has been able to provide is that venue space."
