The Arizona House Government Committee passed a bill that would require Arizona companies to be given a higher priority than out-of-state ones, said a press release from the Arizona House Democrats.

HB 2696 is sponsored by newly appointed Rep. Demion Clinco, a Democrat of Tucson, and it aims to push for in-state businesses to have priority over out-of state companies when bidding on state contracts, if both companies have the lowest bid.

“I didn’t want to waste any time before beginning to navigate the legislative process," Clinco said. "I introduced this bill right away because Arizona benefits from a diverse and robust economy."

He said his bill intends to help locally owned Arizona businesses, which felt the harsh consequences of the recession, as the stabilize and grow.

"When we invest in local businesses, we are investing in job creation and our communities," he said.

The bill passed Tuesday with a 6-2 vote, and must now be heard in the House Rules Committee.
