Two University of Arizona Russian studies students got to intern at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and recently returned to wildcat grounds to share their experience.
Desiree Piazza and Joseph Shaw applied after NBC contacted the UA asking for internship candidates. The pair were hired as NBC Olympic guide interns, and were among a group of 28.
"This happened well over a year ago," Shaw said. "The UA was identified as a school, in the West Coast region, with an extremely good Russian department."
As 2 of the 11 Russian speakers in the group, Piazza and Shaw did everything that involved translation: from egressing guests from buses and venues, to transporting people to and from the airport and venues.
Piazza and Shaw arrived to Sochi about a week prior to the Olympics's kick off to train and tour the venues.
"I remember walking into the park, and seeing the rings in front of the Fisht Stadium for the first time and I was in absolute awe," Piazza said.
