Arizona Republican state Sen. Steve Yarborough says he defended his bill adding protections for people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays in a meeting with Gov. Jan Brewer Wednesday.
The Republican from Chandler is the primary sponsor of the bill, which must be signed or vetoed by the governor by Saturday. Yarborough was among supporters and opponents of the bill invited to meet with the governor Wednesday.
Brewer tweeted late Tuesday that she will "do the right thing" for Arizona, but hasn't said how she'll act.
Three Republican Senators who voted for the bill have reversed course and are asking Brewer to veto it. Sen. Bob Worsley of Mesa said the bill has already done unnecessary damage to the state.
