Emails released by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's office show that her staff worked with proponents of a bill that, according to opponents, would have allowed businesses to refuse service to gay, lesbian and transgender people.
The meetings with Brewer's legal counsel and policy director came before the legislation was introduced in January. The bill drew fierce opposition from Democrats and later the business community. Brewer vetoed it last month.
Brewer spokesman Andrew Wilder said such talks between staff and bills' proponents are routine and never come with a promise the governor will support the final product.
Center for Arizona Policy president Cathi Herrod blamed the bill's fate on opponents who misrepresented its purpose.
