For those tired of the trek up and down Interstate 10 to get between Tucson and Phoenix, state transportation officials have three proposals to take care of that.

The Arizona Department of Transportation wants public comment on possible routes for a passenger train to run between Arizona’s two largest cities.

All routes would start at Tucson International Airport and run through Eloy, to then head to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, with legs running to the west valley.

The middle portion has three options: one running through Casa Grande and the Gila River Indian community, and two alternates heading through Coolidge and servicing Mesa Gateway Airport.

Though the ADOT is seeking input on the idea, it said it still has a ways to go to make it a reality.

“The whole notion of rail between Phoenix and Tucson is something that would require a lot of involvement from other agencies, from the state, from the communities, and potential riders of the system," said Tim Tait, communication director at ADOT. "It’s not something that’s going to just happen.”
