Over 60 years ago, the hit television show I Love Lucy made it's debut. Soon after, it became television's first blockbuster sitcom. Now, a new stage show, I Love Lucy Live on Stage recreates the experience of being at a live studio taping of I Love Lucy episodes.

Sirena Irwin, who plays Lucy, said that taking the role of such an iconic character was terrifying at first.

"We know that these characters are living deeply in the hearts of viewers," Irwin said.

Joanna Daniels plays Lucy's best friend Ethel. She said to prepare for these roles, they watched episodes to study their characters interactions and mannerisms.

"It's an honor," Daniels said. "A true honor, because these characters have meant so much."

The goal of the production is to take the audience back in time for a re-creation of being in the Desilu Studios during an I Love Lucy filming. Actors engage with audience members as soon as they arrive, and between scenes singers provide jingles and commercials from the fifties.

I Love Lucy, Live on Stage will be at the University of Arizona's Centennial Hall until Sunday, March 30.

Broadway in Tucson is an underwriter of Arizona Public Media.
