Local nonprofits are celebrating after a 24-hour campaign called Arizona Gives Day.

While final numbers are not yet available, Lauren Schroeder of Arizona Alliance of Nonprofits estimates a total near $1.4 million.

Last year, the event raised just over $1 million, too.

"The nonprofits really engaged this year, and I think everyone learned from the first year," Schroeder said. "The folks who were constantly on the leader boards had strategies, they planned months in advance about how they were going to get the word out and cultivate the money."

Along with the money they received from donations, nonprofits competed for additional funds from event sponsors by finishing in the top 10 of certain categories. Arizona charities that are currently in the top 10 include Ben's Bells, Foundation for Creative Broadcasting and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.
