U.S. Rep. Ron Barber sent a letter to the Secretary of the Air Force Deborah James asking that as F-35 units take up station at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, the current F-16s based in Maricopa County be rehoused at Davis-Monthan Air Force in Tucson.

Currently, the A-10 is the main aircraft at the air base, but the Pentagon is trying to mothball the aging plane.

Barber and Sen. John McCain are fighting that proposal.

In his letter to the Air Force secretary, Barber argued that Tucson would be a good home for Luke AFB’s displaced units in the future, because Davis-Monthan airmen already have experience dealing with the F-16.

He also pointed out that the conditions making Luke such a good place for F-16 training are also found 100 miles Tucson.
