Space scientists have made an exciting discovery, an asteroid with rings. It is the first time anything other than a planet has been found to have rings.

“This is the first time we have seen rings around a small object like this,” says Dante Lauretta, a professor in the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.

The discovery was a surprise and has launched a new line of theories to explain how rings can form around a small object in space.

In other space news, NASA has approved the final design of OSIRIS-REx. Lauretta is the primary investigator of the mission which will send a craft into space to collect a sample from the asteroid Bennu.

Researchers hope to use the sample to learn more about the origins of life on earth.
