Gov. Jan Brewer and Arizona State Parks are encouraging children and families to spend time outside by declaring Saturday Kids to Parks Day.

Organizers are planning special events at various state parks around Arizona in order to introduce young people to a more active lifestyle.

“It’s important to introduce a new generation to our parks because of the decline in park attendance and the understanding that children need to get away from the TV, get off of the couch, and start building their own active lifestyle,” said Ellen Bilbrey, chief public information officer at Arizona State Parks.

Three Southern Arizona state parks will hold events in honor of the special day.

Oracle State Park will have special hands-on activities for children all day. Patagonia Lake State Park is holding its annual Mariachi Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And Kartchner Caverns State Park will hold a moonlight hike starting at 6:30 pm.
