CPS Special Legislative Session Begins

House Speaker Andy Tobin told his chamber he expects committee votes on the proposals Wednesday and final votes Thursday.

The Arizona House and Senate officially opened the special session on Child Protective Service Tuesday afternoon.

The bills both chambers are hoping to pass were still being drafted at the time.

Gov. Jan Brewer is asking state lawmakers for $60 million to set up a new children’s welfare agency. Some Republican leaders in the Legislature are balking at giving her all of that money up front. They want to see specific benchmarks before writing the necessary checks. Brewer said she wants all the money.
