Capt. Kevin Eptstein and Tech Sgt. Brandon Daugherty received the Bronze Star Medal with valor for a rescue they performed in February 2012, while deployed in Afghanistan.

The two men both serve in the 55th Rescue Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson.

A rescue unit was called to help after a IED, improvised explosive device, blast hit a military vehicle and killed a number of soldiers. While the pararescuemen were trying to put out the vehicle fire and help survivors, another IED detonated.

Epstein and Daugherty helped soldiers injured in the second blast, including guiding a stretcher through a mine field to get one soldier to a waiting helicopter.

The Bronze Star is the fourth highest individual honor given out in the military.
