The American Legion is opening a "crisis command center" in Phoenix to help veterans caught up in the waiting list scandal at Veteran Affairs medical centers.

The Legion said it is sending a team of experts to Phoenix to set up the center set to open next week.

The director of the Legion's Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Division in Washington said the crisis center will have a triage team to identify veterans' problems and direct them to stations where they'll get help. Verna Jones said on-site stations include benefits claims, enrollment in VA health care and bereavement counseling.

The center is to be set up at the American Legion's Post 1 on Seventh Avenue and open at noon on Tuesday.
