LA Opera on the Air broadcasts continue on Classical 90.5 at noon this Saturday, August 9, with a performance of Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti. The Italian libretto, by Salvadore Cammarano, is based loosely on Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The performance will run approximately two hours and thirty minutes. James Conlon conducts.
A darkly romantic tale of family honor, betrayal and madness returns to LA Opera for the first time in a decade. Forced by her family to marry against her will, Lucia descends into madness. Her chilling, blood-spattered reappearance at the wedding reception has become one of the most iconic scenes in all opera. A tour-de-force of Italian Romantic opera at its most powerful and dramatic, Lucia di Lammermoor is the gleaming jewel in opera’s bel canto crown.
Opera News said that Russian coloratura soprano Albina Shagimuratova's portrayal of Lucia is “a phenomenon that must be heard to be believed.” Opera News also stated that tenor Saimir Pirgu's performance as Lucia’s secret lover displayed "youthful stage presence and eager phrasing...[that] mark him out as a tenor to watch.”
